So, you like to think you keep a pretty green home, eh? You get your energy through places like www.energysavings.com, and the like, you keep green cleaning products in your home and you endeavor to recycle regularly in an effort to minimize waste. That’s wonderful, but did you also know there are lots of little things you can do in your home to help save on both energy and resources?

Take the toilet, for example. Do you know how many gallons of water are wasted every time you flush the toilet? Up to 4 gallons of water in some typical and older toilets. Of course, this isn’t to say that you should flush the toilet less – that would be highly unsanitary. However, it really doesn’t take 4 gallons to flush away what needs to be flushed and you could save on both plumbing and the amount of water wasted by investing in a more efficient toilet.

Leaving the lights on in a room you aren’t using is another source of energy waste in most homes. Sure, you might endeavor to turn off the lights whenever you can, but what about your children? Sometimes they forget. Luckily, there are timers and even motion detectors you can purchase that efficiently turn off the lights whenever no one is present in the room.

These are all helpful ways you can minimize the wasting of resources in your home, and if you follow these suggestions you will make your green home even greener.

As the saying goes, “one man’s silver is another man’s gold”, and this has never been a truer statement for those of us who want to repurpose old items that still have some life left in them. Not only can repurposing items let you express yourself artistically with a one of a kind item that you can be proud of, but it can cut down on the amount of waste that goes in landfills.

My favorite thing to do is to hit garage sales, thrift stores, or take a cruise around neighborhoods on garbage day. We live in a rather disposable society, and you’d be amazed at the types of treasures you can find. Why go to the store and buy expensive clothing that is a drain on natural resources when these clothing items are being made over and over only to end up in someone’s garbage can in a year or so? When you visit a thrift store or a garage sale, you can find beautiful clothing that can be used over and over, and for a very low cost. The same goes for houseware items such as cabinets, tables and furniture. If you are eyeing a particular table, but it has some noticeable marks on it, for just a few bucks you can refurbish the item and make it look brand new!

Whether you have some old newspaper or a pile of used tires, there is a building application for just about any piece of garbage you might have. And there are people around the world who are taking advantage of this phenomenon to create entire homes for pennies on the dollar. Of particular interest is scrap metal, which has been employed to great success recently as a means with which to build an entire home, the windows were of course made from recycled glass. Homes like this cost next to nothing compared to those which utilize fresh lumber and insulation that can cost up to 10 times more than a similar recycled home.

In warmer climates it is not advisable to utilize metal in the overall production of a home due to the heat retention. So, in warmer climates heat dispersal compounds such as rubber are used (typically from tires) in conjunction with mud to an astonishing effect. Recycled carpeting adorns the floors, and of course there is always plenty of used furniture or recycled wood available to create an amazing piece of art from time to time. This all makes for a pretty amazing chance that many pass up when it comes to building a new home!

There are three parts to recycling; reduce, reuse, recycle. If it’s possible to reuse the item, that is a great way to go and there is a huge new trend among fashion designers to make accessories out of durable materials like soda cans or wrappers. This has become a huge trend and has been seen on celebrities and fashion forward trendsetters.

Having a purse made out of a recyclable material shows that you not only are fashionable by following the latest trends shown in magazines and runways, but it also shows that you care about the environment and that you want to do something about reusing the materials that you can to create something new and cool. The whole story can be found at http://envirowriters.wordpress.com/2011/10/24/research-project-part-3-lets-recycle/ Making something out of what would otherwise go to a landfill is a great way to make sure that we are creating a sustainable planet and that we are doing everything we can to prolong our existence. The fact that making a fashionable object out of reusable materials is now popular is just an added bonus and will hopefully help others to follow suit and make sure that our planet stays clean. Fashion designers that use reusable materials are gaining in popularity, and for great reason. They’re helping the planet and making it fashionable!

As our planet becomes warmer, more and more people are becoming environmentally conscious and are looking for alternative forms of energy that are earth friendly. Governments are also trying to end their dependence on foreign sources of oil. Biomass, solar, and wind are three of the most promising sources of alternative energy in use today.
Biomass energy refers to sources of energy derived from natural substances like animal waste, wood, and dried vegetation. One energy company in New England has developed large power plants which operate by burning trash.Additional information can be found at http://masculineskincare.wordpress.com/2011/10/26/what-you-havent-been-told-about-solar-power-is-an-alternative-energy-supply-with-a-bright-future/. This provides energy and keeps trash out of landfills. A major problem with biomass burning is the release of pollutants into the air.
Solar power is becoming very popular with the invention of silicon photovoltaic cells. When sunlight hits a cell, an electrical current is produced. Thousand of these cells are grouped together to create large arrays covering several acres. Solar power is most effective in areas receiving abundant sunshine.
Wind energy is another fast growing form of alternative energy. Large windmills turn turbines producing large amounts of electricity. Many of these windmills are grouped together in areas that are frequently windy such as the Great Plains. Wind farms are expensive to set up, and many people consider them unsightly.
